Luke 14:28 says, “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?” In this passage, Jesus is telling His disciples that there’s a cost in following Him, and that those who genuinely want to follow Him need to understand exactly what it’s going to cost them to do so. There’s going to be some pain and sacrifice involved.
Any of us in business or in the marketplace understand the importance of planning. In business, we do all sorts of planning. It’s critical before we set out to accomplish something in the marketplace that we have a clear understanding of not only what it is that we desire to do, but how we’re going to get there, and how much it’s going to cost us to do it.
For example, let’s say that you’re in sales and you desire to open a new territory and expand your customer base. Have you taken serious inventory of just how long it’s going to take you to reasonably penetrate the new market? Do you have any idea how much it will cost you in terms of time, travel, and finances, let alone the emotional toll of cold calling? We must consider all the cost: mental, physical, emotional, and financial whenever we’re setting out to do something new.
How about you? What’s the next thing that you’re hoping to accomplish? What’s it going to cost you? I suggest that you sit down and take a serious assessment and determine if you have all the needed resources to get the job done. If you’ll do this, you’ll be applying the truth at work.
